Old Mission Peninsula and Traverse City Area Information

Old Mission Peninsula divides Lake Michigan's Grand Traverse Bay into East and West Bays. This region, surrounded by the moderating influence of Lake Michigan and Grand Traverse Bay, is ideal for the growth of fruit and grapes. This region is famous for its nationally acclaimed production of tart cherries, apples, and for producing award winning wines from its many vineyards. It is also famous for its rural atmosphere and grand views of the East and West Bays.

The waters of Lake Michigan provide a beautiful setting for resorts and vacationing as well, with boating, swimming, camping, biking and hiking highly popular. Close by are the Sleeping Bear Dunes, sand dunes reaching up to 400 feet above the sparkling waters.

The Grand Traverse Area has many outstanding opportunities for the visual and performing arts, recreation, golf, sight-seeing, and inspiration. A few of them are listed below. For a more complete list, visit the Peninsula Telephone site (http://www.pentel.net/recreation.html).

Of particular interest are the many festivals that are unique to the Traverse City region, such as the National Cherry Festival usually held around the July 4th weekend, often with the Blue Angels air show. Another summer festival for which Traverse is gaining national recognition is the Traverse City Film Festival, originated by the documentary film maker Michael Moore.
